The winners and their families visited Preston City Council’s Argyll Road depot on Saturday 3 October to see the food waste collection vehicles up close before they start making their way across Preston.
Earlier this year, children and young people from across the city were invited to create artwork for the Council's food waste collection vehicles. Designed to promote food waste reduction, correct recycling, and the benefits of the weekly food waste collection service, the competition attracted an exceptional response. The designs from the three winners will now be seen across Preston, helping share environmental messages with residents.
Rabiya, aged 14 said:
I would tell my friends that food recycling is great because it helps the world, and it has a greater impact if we all work together, as it will make a significant change to the Earth.
Kevin, aged 8, said:
I was really happy to win because so many people entered and there were only three winning places.
I love drawing monsters, so I thought one could be fed rubbish. I put it next to where the rubbish goes in, so it looks like the monster is eating it.
Adam, aged 6, said:
It feels exciting to be a winner.
Councillor Zafar Coupland, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Neighbourhood Services at Preston City Council, said:
It was fantastic to welcome the winners and their families to the Argyll Road Depot and see their reactions when they spotted their artwork on the vehicles for the first time.
The creativity shown by all the children and young people who entered this competition was outstanding. These designs will now be seen across Preston, helping to raise awareness of food waste recycling and encouraging residents to make use of the service.
I would like to thank everyone who took part and congratulate our winners. They should be incredibly proud of their contribution to helping Preston become a more sustainable city.
Each winner received an Amazon Fire HD tablet, kindly donated by vehicle manufacturer Faun Zoeller, along with a £50 Hobbycraft voucher and bug hotel.
The winning designs will now be displayed on Preston's food waste collection vehicles as they carry out weekly food waste collections across the city.
